Former Palestinian national team player, Suliman Al-Obeid, tragically lost his life on Wednesday in an Israeli strike while waiting for international aid. The Palestine Football Association confirmed the devastating news, mourning the loss of the beloved football icon. Al-Obeid, affectionately known as the “Palestinian Pele,” left behind his wife and five children, leaving a void in the hearts of his family, friends, and fans.

The 41-year-old striker made a significant impact on Palestinian football, scoring over 100 goals for Gaza Sport during his illustrious career. Beginning his journey with Khadamat al-Shati, Al-Obeid also showcased his skills at Markaz Shabab al-Am’ari before earning a spot on the national team in 2007. He represented Palestine in 24 matches, finding the back of the net twice and becoming a revered figure in the soccer community.

One of the highlights of Al-Obeid’s career was his spectacular scissor kick goal against Yemen in the 2010 West Asian Football Federation championship, a moment that immortalized his talent and passion for the beautiful game. His contributions to Palestinian soccer will always be remembered, with his legacy living on through the memories he created on the field.

Tragically, Al-Obeid is just one of many individuals associated with sports who have lost their lives in the ongoing conflict, with 662 people from the sports community falling victim to violence since October 2023, as reported by the Palestine Football Association. The devastating toll of the conflict continues to impact not only the lives of athletes but also the entire sports fraternity in the region.

Despite the somber news, the Palestine national team is set to continue their journey, gearing up for their next match against Malaysia in a friendly on September 8. The team is focused on preparing for World Cup qualifying matches, currently in the third round in Asia, as they strive to honor the memories of those who have been lost and bring hope and unity through the power of sport.
