Maritime Celebration of Life Planned for Maine Woman Killed on Pond

Friends and family of Sunshine Stewart, a 48-year-old woman from St. George, Maine, who was tragically killed on Crawford Pond, are organizing a maritime service to celebrate her life on Sunday.

Sunshine went missing in July while paddleboarding on Crawford Pond in Union, a popular summer spot. Her body was later found, and a 17-year-old named Deven Young from Frankfort, Maine, was charged with her murder.

The memorial, dubbed a “maritime celebration of life,” will take place at 10:30 a.m. in the Tenants Harbor section of St. George, where Sunshine resided. The event will feature a procession of vessels in the Tenants Harbor area.

According to organizers, the gathering aims to honor and remember Sunshine Stewart’s vibrant life. The Office of the Maine Attorney General is seeking to try Deven Young as an adult, and a court hearing is scheduled for August 22.

Young has denied the murder charge, and details about the case remain limited. Police have not disclosed a motive for the killing, and the investigation is ongoing.

Stewart, known for her independent spirit and love for the outdoors, had a diverse career and was cherished by many as a loyal friend. Bethany Leach Parmley, a close friend, described Stewart as “a really loyal, wonderful friend.”
