Danielle Clough, a Cape Town-based artist, draws inspiration from vintage copies of Playboy magazine from the 1970s to create large-scale embroidery portraits. What started as a chance encounter with a magazine at an antique shop has evolved into a unique artistic expression that blends nostalgia with contemporary techniques.

In her solo exhibition titled “Crewel Intentions” at Paradigm Gallery + Studio, Clough showcases vibrant fiber compositions that pay homage to a bygone era. Using the historic technique of crewel embroidery, she brings faces and settings from the pages of Playboy to life with wool yarn sewn onto cloth. The result is a textured and visually striking collection that challenges stereotypes and evokes a sense of whimsical beauty.

The 1970s serve as a backdrop for Clough to explore themes of generational transitions, beauty standards, and societal norms. Through careful cropping and lighting, she creates a cinematic effect in her pieces, inviting viewers to engage with the characters on a personal level. The exhibition is a celebration of outdated processes and aesthetics that have stood the test of time, sparking conversations about graceful aging and the evolution of art.

Clough’s work not only showcases her technical skill but also serves as a reflection on the changing landscape of photography, representation, and technology. By merging new materials and saturated hues with imagery from the past, she invites us to reconsider our perceptions of beauty and artistry. Through pieces like “Crewel Intentions” and “The Extra Mile,” Clough captures the essence of a bygone era while infusing it with a contemporary twist.

As visitors explore “Crewel Intentions” in Philadelphia, they are transported back to a time when the world was analog, and the internet was still a distant dream. Clough’s art serves as a bridge between the past and the present, inviting us to appreciate the beauty of a simpler time while acknowledging the progress we have made. With each stitch, she weaves a narrative that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking, inviting us to reflect on our own journey through time.
