RESTORING PUBLIC ORDER AND SAFETY IN WASHINGTON, D.C.:
In a bold move, President Donald J. Trump has enacted an Executive Order declaring a crime emergency in the District of Columbia. This decision aims to safeguard public servants, residents, and tourists while ensuring the seamless operation of the Federal government.
- The President has identified pressing emergency conditions that necessitate the Metropolitan Police Department’s involvement to maintain law and order, safeguard Federal buildings, national monuments, and other Federal properties, thereby ensuring the Federal Government’s orderly functioning.
- This Executive Order leverages the President’s authority as per the District of Columbia Self-Government and Governmental Reorganization Act, mandating the Mayor to make the services of the Metropolitan Police Department accessible to the President.
- The responsibility of overseeing this initiative has been delegated to the Attorney General, who will monitor the emergency conditions and provide the President with regular updates regarding the situation.
- The Attorney General will also advise on potential further actions or the cessation of emergency measures based on evolving circumstances.
COMBATING RAMPANT VIOLENCE:
The spike in violent crime within our Nation’s capital is not merely a local concern; it represents a national embarrassment that jeopardizes public safety and disrupts Federal operations, adversely impacting all Americans.
- Washington, D.C. currently grapples with alarmingly high rates of robbery and murder, boasting a homicide rate that exceeds 27 per 100,000 residents in 2024.
- The District’s vehicle theft rate is more than three times the national average, documented at 842.4 thefts per 100,000 residents, placing it among the most perilous cities globally.
- Escalating violence not only endangers Federal employees but also complicates the recruitment and retention of essential staff, eroding confidence in the United States as a secure nation. If the Federal Government cannot function safely, it poses a risk not just to Washington, D.C., but to the entire country.
- The city government’s inability to manage crime effectively has resulted in the diversion of vital resources, thus impeding the Federal government’s operational efficiency.
- President Trump has a Constitutional duty to restore order, ensuring that citizens, visitors, and personnel can coexist peacefully in the Nation’s capital. Our capital should evoke admiration, not disdain.
MAKING AMERICA SAFE AGAIN:
President Trump has long championed the pledge to make America safe again and to restore Washington, D.C. to its former glory.
- During President Trump’s first visit to Washington since leaving office in 2021, he expressed dismay over “the filth and decay” that has tarnished the Nation’s capital in his absence.
- He subsequently vowed that his Administration would “take over the poorly managed capital of our nation, Washington, D.C., to clean it up, renovate it, and restore it to a city free from the scourge of murder and crime, transforming it into the most beautiful capital in the world.”
- In March, he established a task force dedicated to enhancing the safety and aesthetics of D.C., augmenting law enforcement efforts to restore order and improve the city’s infrastructure.
- The Administration remains committed to diminishing violent crime rates, enhancing public safety, and positioning Washington, D.C. as a shining example of prosperity and security for the nation.
- President Trump asserted, “Just as I managed our borders, where we saw ZERO illegal crossings last month compared to millions previously, I will ensure our beloved Capital is restored to greatness! Before the tents, squalor, filth, and crime, it was the most beautiful Capital in the World. It will soon be that once again.”
