The Trump administration’s decision to take over policing in Washington, DC has sparked controversy among the political class, but for many residents, it comes as a relief. The city’s politicians have failed to prioritize public safety, leaving the federal government with no choice but to intervene when the nation’s capital is plagued by crime.

Despite calls for “home rule,” even Democrats have recognized the need for stronger measures to combat the rising crime rates in DC. A bipartisan effort in 2023 saw the Senate and House override the City Council’s attempt to reduce maximum penalties for violent crimes, including carjackings. This move was supported by President Joe Biden, signaling a united front in the fight against crime.

Carjackings have reached alarming levels in the city, with a threefold increase since 2018. Youth crime is on the rise, yet city leaders have failed to address the root causes of violence. President Trump had warned Mayor Muriel Bowser about the need for action, giving her six months to make improvements. However, recent high-profile crimes, such as the tragic shooting death of 3-year-old Honesty Cheadle, underscore the urgency of the situation.

Washington, DC currently has a higher murder rate per capita than cities like Mexico City and Bogotá, Colombia, with a homicide rate six times that of New York City. In response to these alarming statistics, the federal intervention will bring in additional resources, including hundreds of National Guard troops and an expanded presence of the federal Park Police.

It is important to note that the federal government shares some responsibility for the high crime rates in DC. The US Attorney for the District of Columbia is tasked with prosecuting felony crimes in the city, yet Biden appointees have declined to prosecute over half of local cases.

As the intervention moves forward, it is crucial that all stakeholders, including the City Council and Democrats in Congress and neighboring states, support these efforts. Success in reducing crime will benefit everyone except the criminals, with the safety and well-being of DC’s citizens being the ultimate priority.
