With the rise of social media platforms like TikTok, users are constantly adapting to the ever-changing trends and challenges that come their way. One such user, Rickquell Flowers, recently went viral after posting a video that sparked a wave of controversy and criticism.

In an interview with Vogue, Flowers admitted that she intentionally created content that she knew would provoke a reaction from viewers. She explained, “I’m just trying to give them what they want, if they want to be mad. If I notice a trend that seems like a little bit of rage bait and I’m in the mood that day, I’ll do it.” Despite knowing that she didn’t look her best in the video, Flowers embraced the negativity and saw a significant increase in her following as a result.

While Flowers acknowledged the prevalence of negativity on TikTok, she also highlighted the supportive community of women who engage with her makeup tutorials. She emphasized, “There are women supporting women on there, and a lot of people are asking for makeup tutorials.” Following her viral video, Flowers received an outpouring of positive comments praising her bone structure, freckles, and glowing skin.

The viral trend that Flowers participated in involved a filter that purported to show users what they would look like as they age. However, dermatologists have debunked the accuracy of this filter, noting that it fails to consider genetic factors, environmental influences, and skincare routines. Despite its lack of scientific validity, the trend gained traction due to its appeal as a platform for users to make derogatory comments about a person’s appearance.

Moraya Seeger DeGeare, a licensed therapist and co-founder of BFF Therapy, raised concerns about the societal implications of this trend. She remarked, “When we think of social media impacting culture, we now have a trend where people are really like, ‘Oh, let me critique if you’re aging well.’ It reinforces a society that’s already doing that.” DeGeare highlighted the superficial nature of online interactions, where individuals are quick to judge based solely on appearance.

In conclusion, the viral nature of TikTok challenges reflects a broader societal obsession with beauty and youth. While users like Rickquell Flowers may capitalize on controversial trends to gain followers, it is important to recognize the harmful impact of perpetuating negative stereotypes and unrealistic beauty standards online. As social media continues to evolve, it is crucial for users to engage thoughtfully and respectfully in online interactions.
