Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently outlined the plans for the deployment of National Guard troops in Washington, DC to combat crime in the nation’s capital. Hegseth mentioned that Guardsmen from DC and other states will be deployed in the coming weeks as “force multipliers” for local and federal law enforcement. The military’s role in DC will be similar to the deployment of National Guard and US Marine service members in Los Angeles to protect federal law enforcement during immigration raids.

Under Title 32 authorization, the National Guard will have broad latitude but will not be involved in law enforcement functions. They will be proactive in assisting federal agents and can intervene if they witness a crime in progress. Hegseth assured that the National Guard troops will not engage in rogue law enforcement activities but will apply common sense to protect citizens and themselves.

The deployment of National Guard troops in DC is likened to the mobilization of troops in Los Angeles earlier this summer. President Trump activated 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marine service members in California amid violent anti-ICE riots. The troops were able to assist in interdicting and temporarily detaining individuals until law enforcement arrived.

Hegseth did not specify the exact number of Guardsmen who will be activated in DC or the duration of their patrol. The decision will be based on conditions and the need to support law enforcement in restoring law and order in the city. Trump signed an executive order mobilizing the DC National Guard to ensure the safety and security of the capital.

Overall, the deployment of National Guard troops in Washington, DC aims to enhance public safety and support law enforcement efforts to combat crime in the city. The presence of the National Guard will serve as a complementary force to local and federal authorities, ensuring that Washington, DC remains a safe and beautiful city for all its residents and visitors.
