A recent incident of catalytic converter theft on the West Side has prompted a local business owner to speak out and urge vigilance among the community. The theft, which took place in the early hours of the morning in front of Taurus Security Shutters’ showroom at 5906 West Roosevelt Road, was captured on multiple security cameras.

The owner of the company, Kurt Lamothe, expressed shock at the boldness of the thieves involved in the theft. In the security footage, a dark vehicle pulls up in front of the company’s work van, and two individuals emerge from the vehicle. One of the individuals is seen carrying a yellow Sawzall-style tool, which is used to quickly remove the catalytic converter from the van. Within minutes, the converter is removed and tossed into the back seat of the thieves’ sedan.

The cost of repairing a stolen catalytic converter can be significant, with estimates often exceeding $1,000. This type of theft is common in Chicago due to the valuable metals contained within the converters, such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium. Thieves are able to quickly remove the converter using battery-powered saws, leaving victims with costly repairs and potential delays in obtaining replacement parts.

To prevent catalytic converter theft, it is recommended to park in well-lit areas, install anti-theft shields, engrave the VIN on the converter, or keep vehicles in a garage when possible. These preventative measures can help deter thieves and protect vehicles from becoming targets for theft.

Catalytic converter thefts continue to be a persistent issue in Chicago, and incidents like the one experienced by Taurus Security Shutters serve as a reminder of the importance of remaining vigilant and taking steps to protect valuable automotive components. By raising awareness of this issue and sharing their experience, business owners like Kurt Lamothe hope to help others in the community avoid falling victim to similar crimes.
