Meta’s chief technology officer, Andrew Bosworth, recently took to his Instagram to provide a more technical explanation for the multiple demo failures of Meta’s new smart glasses technology at Meta Connect, the company’s developer conference. The event showcased three new pairs of smart glasses: an upgraded version of the Ray-Ban Meta, a new Meta Ray-Ban Display with a wristband controller, and the sports-focused Oakley Meta Vanguard.

During the live demos at the event, there were several technical glitches that caused the demos to fail. In one instance, cooking content creator Jack Mancuso’s Ray-Ban Meta glasses failed to respond to his query about a sauce recipe, skipping ahead in the process and forcing him to stop the demo. The issue was initially attributed to Wi-Fi connectivity problems.

In another demo, the glasses failed to connect to a live WhatsApp video call between Bosworth and Zuckerberg, prompting Zuckerberg to abandon the attempt. Bosworth later clarified that the issue with the chef’s glasses was not related to Wi-Fi but rather a mistake in resource management planning.

During a Q&A session on Instagram following the event, Bosworth explained that the failure was caused by a mismanagement of resources. When the chef triggered the Live AI feature, it activated every Ray-Ban Meta glasses in the building, overwhelming the server and causing a disruption. Additionally, the routing of Live AI traffic to Meta’s development server further exacerbated the issue by impacting all headsets in the building.

The failure with the WhatsApp call was attributed to a new bug where the smart glasses’ display went to sleep at the moment the call came in, resulting in an unresponsive notification. Bosworth described this as a “race condition” bug, which was a first-time occurrence for the team. Despite the setbacks, Bosworth remained confident in the product, emphasizing that the glitches were related to the demo and not indicative of a product failure.

Overall, while the live demos at Meta Connect may have experienced technical difficulties, Bosworth reassured followers that the smart glasses technology has the potential to deliver on its promises. The team has since addressed the bugs and is committed to improving the user experience moving forward.
