Clio Art Fair has managed to maintain its small but impactful presence in the art world for over a decade. Despite its modest size, the fair does not feel cramped when you step into the Chelsea art show. The self-proclaimed “anti-fair” returned for its second consecutive New York City fall edition, showcasing 35 to 40 artists in the ground floor of 511 West 25th Street.

Founded by Alessandro Berni in 2014, Clio Art Fair aims to provide a platform for artists outside the traditional art circuit. Many of these artists do not have gallery representation, making it difficult for them to participate in larger art shows like Frieze or the Armory Show. Berni’s vision is to offer these artists an opportunity to exhibit their work during art fair season and connect with collectors and curators.

The fair’s intimate scale is intentional, as Berni believes that overwhelming visitors with too many artworks can diminish the meaningful dialogue between the viewer and the artwork. Despite receiving over 500 submissions this year, Berni plans to continue keeping the fair small by splitting it into two editions held on separate weekends in May and September.

One of the distinctive features of Clio Art Fair is its focus on independent artists from around the world. This allows the fair to showcase works that have not been previously seen in the United States. The absence of gallery representation also keeps prices affordable for both artists and collectors.

Visitors to Clio Art Fair have the opportunity to engage directly with artists, who are eager to share their creative process and inspirations. The fair offers a personal experience that contrasts with the commercial nature of larger art fairs where dealers often act as intermediaries for artists.

At the opening of the fall edition, artists from more than 20 countries mingled with the public, creating a vibrant and diverse atmosphere. From New York City architectural photo collages to eerie nighttime landscapes, the fair featured a wide range of artworks that captivated viewers.

As Clio Art Fair continues to evolve, it remains committed to putting artists first and providing a platform for emerging talents to showcase their work. With a mix of local and international artists, the fair offers a refreshing alternative to traditional art shows. Whether it’s the affordability of the artworks or the lively atmosphere, Clio Art Fair stands out as a unique and welcoming space for both artists and art enthusiasts alike.
