Mike Johnson And Trump May Have Just Won Democrats The House With Doomed CR Vote

In a dramatic display of political maneuvering, former President Trump issued a directive that sent Speaker of the House Mike Johnson rushing to orchestrate a vote on a continuing resolution intended to keep the government funded for a mere 50 days. This resolution, however, notably sidesteps any attempts to reinstate Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies or to reverse cuts to Medicaid—issues that could have far-reaching implications for millions of Americans.

The resolution squeaked through the House with a vote tally of 217-212. Notably, two Republicans—Thomas Massie and Victoria Spartz—joined forces with the Democrats in opposition, while one Democrat, Jared Golden, crossed party lines to support the resolution.

The driving forces behind this vote were none other than Trump and Johnson, with Trump taking to Truth Social to rally support among House Republicans. In a post that read like a call to arms, he stated:

TOMORROW, House Republicans are taking a very important Vote to pass a CLEAN TEMPORARY FUNDING BILL. The Leader of the Democrats, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, wants to shut the Government down. Republicans want the Government to stay open. Every House Republican should UNIFY, and VOTE YES!

Despite the House’s approval, the fate of Johnson’s continuing resolution looks grim in the Senate, where Democrats have already voiced their skepticism—an outcome widely anticipated to lead to its failure.

As the Senate prepares to vote on this resolution, it will soon embark on a recess, returning just one day before the government could potentially run out of funds. Senate Majority Leader John Thune is setting the stage for a vote that could be framed as a Democratic decision to shut down the government. However, as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries pointedly remarked before the vote, the reality is that the Republicans currently hold the reins. Should the government face a shutdown, it will be branded as a Republican failure.

Video of Jeffries:

By refusing to engage in negotiations with Democrats over vital healthcare issues, Republicans are unintentionally positioning themselves for a likely protracted government shutdown.

The crux of this impending shutdown revolves around healthcare, an issue that Republicans are inadvertently handing to Democrats as a potent platform to reclaim control of the House.

In essence, the GOP seems to be marching toward an electoral catastrophe, following Trump’s directives without a clear strategy or consideration of the broader implications.

What are your thoughts on the House’s vote regarding the continuing resolution? Feel free to share your insights in the comments below.
