Yoga has played many roles in my life – from being a form of exercise to a source of discipline, refuge, and wisdom. It has provided me with a safe space to connect with my body and find peace in stillness. Starting a yoga class with a mind full of chaos and anxiety, only to end it with a sense of calm and quiet, has been a transformative experience for me. Simply allowing myself to relax and let go was a concept that was foreign to me before I found yoga.

However, above all, yoga has been my medicine. It not only helped me heal physically, especially with my scoliosis, but it also aided in healing the invisible wounds of trauma that had shaped my entire being. As my yoga practice evolved, it shifted from being just a physical routine to becoming a tool for emotional and spiritual growth.

Through my journey with yoga, I have learned valuable lessons that have helped me navigate through healing, and I believe they can help others too.

One of the first lessons I learned was to listen to my body. Pain and tension are not random occurrences; they are messages from the body. By paying attention to where I felt tightness or discomfort, I was able to understand what my body was trying to communicate to me.

As I delved deeper into my practice, I realized the importance of connecting with my breath. While yoga initially started as a form of exercise for me, focusing on my breath allowed me to anchor myself in the present moment and begin the process of healing from within.

Yoga also served as a mirror for my life, reflecting patterns and behaviors that I exhibited both on and off the mat. It taught me to soften where I was rigid and strengthen where I was weak, leading to a more balanced and integrated sense of self.

Teaching yoga to others further reinforced the lessons I needed to learn. Sharing my healing journey with students and patients not only helped them but also deepened my own understanding and embodiment of the lessons I had learned.

The most profound transformation came when I let go of structure and expectations in the practice of yoga. In the vast expanse of the desert, I found freedom and presence that transcended mere physical postures. Yoga became a practice of liberation, allowing me to connect with my true self and embrace wholeness despite imperfections.

Today, yoga remains my anchor, guiding me in living a life of purpose and fulfillment. It has taught me that healing is not about erasing the past or achieving perfection but about embracing life fully with all its ups and downs. By balancing discipline with grace, we can move from a place of trauma to resilience, rigidity to flow, and brokenness to wholeness.

In conclusion, yoga is not just a form of exercise; it is a path to healing and transformation. Through listening to our bodies, connecting with our breath, reflecting on our patterns, teaching others, and creating space for free practice, we can embark on a journey of self-discovery and healing. Yoga has the power to not only heal our bodies but also our minds and souls, guiding us towards a life of balance, strength, and freedom.
