Campaigners Interrupt Republican Overseas UK State Visit Dinner in Protest Against Trump’s Fossil Fuel Policies

Campaigners from Fossil Free London made a bold statement last night by interrupting the Republican Overseas UK State Visit Dinner at the Windsor Guildhall. The dinner, attended by Republican supporters celebrating the state visit of President Donald J Trump, was disrupted by activists chanting “if you drill baby drill, how many will you kill?” and holding up banners reading “oily money kills”. The protesters were eventually removed from the building, with some claiming that dinner attendees had physically assaulted them.

Robin Wells, the director of Fossil Free London, expressed the group’s concerns, stating, “’Drill baby drill’ will kill billions. That’s not just according to us. That’s according to the strait-laced men and women of the insurance industry.”

Climate Crisis Risks

Wells emphasized the severity of the climate crisis, citing a report by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries which predicts that almost half of the world’s population could lose their lives due to climate impacts in our lifetime. The activists highlighted the urgent need to address the escalating risks posed by climate change and called for an end to the drilling of fossil fuels.

Environmental Concerns

Academics have warned that President Trump’s aggressive promotion of fossil fuels, with his “drill baby drill” approach, could set back global environmental progress by decades. A recent report by risk experts suggested that the effects of the climate crisis could lead to the deaths of up to four billion people by 2050 if global temperatures rise by 3 degrees or more.

Despite these warnings, Trump has been pressuring the UK to prioritize oil and gas production over renewable energy sources. The UK government is currently facing a decision on whether to approve the controversial Rosebank oil field, a move that has sparked significant opposition from environmental groups.

Protest and Resistance

The dinner protest was just one of many actions taken against Trump’s visit to the UK, with a large demonstration planned in Central London by the Stop Trump Coalition. The activists are determined to challenge the Trump administration’s fossil fuel policies and push for a transition towards sustainable energy alternatives.
