Dr. Mark Heilman, Vice President of Environmental Restoration and Advocacy at SePRO, is making waves in the field of water restoration. With two decades of experience under his belt, Dr. Heilman and his team have successfully revitalized 1.4 million acres of polluted lakes and wetlands across North America.

One of the most pressing issues facing bodies of water in America is the presence of harmful algal blooms. These blooms can be devastating, leading to toxic green waters that threaten aquatic life and human health. Dr. Heilman explains that the primary culprit behind these blooms is phosphorus, which enters waterways through fertilizers and runoff. Once in the water, phosphorus acts as a fertilizer for algae, causing massive blooms to form.

The consequences of these blooms are severe, with reports of liver damage, neurological problems, and even death in humans and animals exposed to the toxins produced by the algae. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has noted an increase in the number of lakes with poor water quality due to excessive phosphorus levels, highlighting the urgent need for action.

Dr. Heilman emphasizes the role that everyday activities, such as lawn care, play in exacerbating this crisis. Grass clippings containing phosphorus can contribute significantly to the growth of algae in waterways, creating a domino effect that harms the ecosystem. He likens the process of treating a polluted lake to performing surgery on an entire ecosystem, requiring a thorough assessment of water quality, community engagement, and long-term management strategies.

In addition to the challenges posed by phosphorus pollution, Dr. Heilman points out that climate change is further complicating the situation. Warming water temperatures and the proliferation of invasive species like hydrilla are creating new hurdles for water restoration efforts. Despite these challenges, Dr. Heilman remains optimistic about the power of prevention, stating that it is easier and more cost-effective to prevent problems before they arise than to address them once they have taken hold.
