Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang made a significant announcement during his visit to the United Kingdom this week, revealing plans to invest £2 billion ($2.6 billion) to boost the country’s AI startup ecosystem. Among the potential recipients of Nvidia’s investment commitment is Wayve, a U.K.-based self-driving tech startup, as confirmed by the company to JS.

Wayve disclosed that it has entered into a letter of intent with Nvidia to explore a $500 million strategic investment in the startup’s upcoming funding round. Notably, Nvidia had previously participated in Wayve’s $1.05 billion Series C financing round that concluded in May 2024.

A spokesperson from Wayve validated that the $500 million provisional commitment aligns with Nvidia’s larger AI startup investment initiative. The specifics of the investment were shared by Nvidia at an event on Thursday, where they announced the involvement of venture capital investors Accel, Air Street Capital, Balderton, Hoxton Ventures, and Phoenix Court. However, Nvidia declined to comment on the letter of intent announcement.

Wayve’s CEO, Alex Kendall, refrained from providing a specific timeline for the closing of its Series D round but emphasized that the company is actively working towards it. Founded in 2017, Wayve has garnered attention for its innovative approach to automated driving, utilizing a self-learning system rather than traditional rule-based methods in its self-driving software.

The company’s neural network-based technology does not rely on high-definition maps, instead leveraging data to instruct the vehicle on driving maneuvers. This data-driven learning approach supports both assisted and fully automated driving systems, positioning Wayve as a key player in the autonomous vehicle space.

Wayve’s unique self-learning strategy, reminiscent of Tesla’s approach, appeals to automakers due to its sensor-agnostic nature, enabling compatibility with existing hardware like cameras and radar. The company’s close collaboration with Nvidia since 2018 has further strengthened its position in the market.

Recently, Wayve introduced its generation 3 self-driving platform, featuring Nvidia GPUs and the Nvidia Drive AGX Thor development kit. This advancement allows for enhanced driving assistance and Level 4 autonomous capabilities on both urban and highway roads.

Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, expressed his enthusiasm for Wayve’s future prospects, emphasizing the startup’s potential to become a trillion-dollar company. In a video showcasing his ride in a Wayve-equipped vehicle on London’s bustling streets, Huang demonstrated his support by providing Kendall with Nvidia’s Thor developer kit.

The partnership between Wayve and Nvidia continues to evolve, with both companies pushing the boundaries of autonomous driving technology. As Wayve pursues its mission to revolutionize the automotive industry with its data-driven approach, the support from Nvidia’s substantial investment underscores the bright future ahead for the U.K.-based startup.
