Warning: WhatsApp Scam Alert – Fraudsters Targeting ID Cards

If you are a regular user of WhatsApp, it is essential to be aware of a new scam alert.

The Brandenburg Consumer Advice Centre in Germany has issued a warning about fraudsters attempting to obtain photos of ID cards through WhatsApp. These cyber criminals are using fake letters from lawyers, cryptocurrency platforms, or hiring companies to make their fraudulent activities seem legitimate. This tactic is not limited to Germany and could potentially occur worldwide.

The consumer protection organizations have outlined the modus operandi of these fraudsters. They impersonate employees of banks, law firms, or cryptocurrency platforms and may contact individuals through traditional postal letters. These letters contain urgent requests for the recipient to verify their identity online. By using the names of reputable service providers or creating counterfeit official letters, the scammers aim to gain the trust of their targets.

In a recent scam instance, the fraudsters posed as employees of a Swiss law firm. The consumer protection organization has shared a sample letter used by the criminals. In this letter, the scammers claim that the recipients are victims of a scam related to competitions or cryptocurrencies. They falsely assert that the victims are entitled to compensation amounting to thousands of euros, supposedly confirmed by the courts. To receive this payout, the targets are instructed to verify their identity via WhatsApp, telephone, or email.

If individuals comply with the scammers’ requests and provide copies or scans of their ID cards or display them via video chat, the sensitive information on these documents falls into the hands of the criminals. While this type of scam is not new, the disguise as a Swiss law firm is a recent development. Fraudsters continuously innovate new tactics to deceive their victims.

The repercussions of this scam can be severe, as fraudsters can misuse the data from ID cards for opening bank accounts, making online purchases, or conducting transactions in someone else’s name.

If you ever receive a request to send ID documents via WhatsApp or any other digital platform, exercise caution and verify the legitimacy of the request. When in doubt, refrain from sharing sensitive information.
