Phia: The Future of Fashion Shopping

Phia, a new fashion startup founded by Phoebe Gates, daughter of Bill Gates, and her Stanford roommate Sophia Kianni, is making waves in the e-commerce world. The app, described as the “Google flights for fashion,” helps users compare prices of fashion items across the web, making shopping easier and more accessible.

In a recent interview with JS, Gates emphasized the importance of improving access to fashion items and simplifying the online shopping experience. With the rise of artificial intelligence, Phia is among the many startups aiming to revolutionize the way we shop online.

Since its launch in April, Phia has garnered over 500,000 users and secured an impressive $8 million seed round in just three-and-a-half weeks. Investors include big names like Kleiner Perkins, Kris Jenner, and Hailey Bieber, highlighting the growing interest in tech-driven fashion solutions.

The app recently unveiled an enhanced search feature that scans over 300 million fashion items, allowing users to seamlessly browse through their previous purchases and discover new items of interest. Gates and Kianni’s journey to creating Phia began with a desktop Chrome extension for finding second-hand alternatives, but user feedback prompted them to shift focus to mobile and instant price checks.

With a diverse range of investors, including renowned figures like Michael Rubin, Sara Blakely, and Sheryl Sandberg, Phia has attracted attention for its innovative approach to online shopping. Kianni, a respected activist with a background in climate advocacy, brings a unique perspective to the startup, emphasizing the importance of sustainability and social impact.

Phia’s marketing strategy appeals to Gen Z sensibilities, leveraging social media, podcasts, and innovative technologies like ChatGPT to engage with customers. The Burnouts podcast, hosted by Gates and Kianni, has gained a significant following and serves as a platform for sharing insights on entrepreneurship and career development.

Looking ahead, Gates and Kianni plan to use the funding to expand their team and further develop Phia’s personalized shopping capabilities. The ultimate goal is to create a personalized agent that can guide customers on when to buy, resell, and keep items, revolutionizing the shopping experience.

As Phia continues to grow and innovate, Gates and Kianni remain committed to transparency and authenticity, inviting their audience to join them on their journey of learning and growth. With their digital-first approach and dedication to customer satisfaction, Phia is poised to shape the future of fashion shopping.
