Exploring the Intersection of Nature and Industry: Edward Burtynsky’s “Shifting Topography” Exhibition

Borusan Contemporary is proud to present Edward Burtynsky’s first major solo exhibition in Türkiye, curated by Marcus Schubert. Titled Shifting Topography, this exhibition showcases new work alongside a comprehensive selection of pieces from Burtynsky’s 30-year career.

Renowned for his photography capturing the intricate relationship between nature and human industry, Burtynsky’s work goes beyond mere documentation. Through his lens, he offers a profound reflection on the connection between humanity and our planet, spanning over four decades of exploration.

Commissioned by the Borusan Contemporary Art Collection, the exhibition is divided into different themes on each floor. “Erosion” introduces new images from Burtynsky’s recent expedition across central Anatolia and the Mediterranean. “Water and Salt” delves into the impact of these elemental forces on our environment and culture, from India’s Stepwells to Chile’s lithium brine fields. “African Studies” examines the transformative effects of human activity on Sub-Saharan countries, while “Nature” revisits Burtynsky’s early landscape photography with a new perspective. “Quarries” showcases selections from the middle period of his career, exploring negative architecture, while “Berezniki Mine” offers a metaphorical glimpse into the concept of transformation. Finally, “Oil” captures the paradox of a vital industrial fuel that has also contributed to climate change.

Situated in the historic Haunted Mansion in Istanbul, Borusan Contemporary is dedicated to contemporary art, offering a diverse program of exhibitions, events, and educational activities based on the Borusan Contemporary Art Collection. Since 2011, the institution has supported new artistic productions and publications through commissions and acquisitions.
