Alison Saar: A Lifetime of Art and Influence

Alison Saar’s artistic journey began at a young age, growing up in a creative environment with artist parents who nurtured her passion for art. Raised in Laurel Canyon, an artistic enclave in Los Angeles, California, Saar and her sisters were encouraged to experiment and create freely, instilling in them a sense of artistic freedom and value in their creations.

On September 20, Saar will be honored at the David C. Driskell Gala at Atlanta’s High Museum of Art as the 20th recipient of the Driskell Prize. This prestigious award recognizes artists and scholars who contribute to the lineage of African American art. Saar’s unique style, influenced by folk art, primarily focuses on depicting Black women and girls, showcasing her material experimentation and scholarly foundation.

Saar’s artwork is a reflection of her deep connection to African diasporic histories, motherhood, and spirituality. She often incorporates symbols of chattel slavery, using materials like bronze, stone, and wood to create powerful and evocative sculptures. Her work explores themes of revolt, empowerment, and ancestral history, drawing inspiration from her upbringing surrounded by strong Black women involved in activism and the arts.

As a mother herself, Saar’s journey into motherhood has influenced her artistic practice, leading her to focus on portraying women and girls in her work. Her daughter has even served as a model for some of her artworks, further intertwining her personal life with her creative expression.

Throughout her career, Saar’s work has been exhibited at major institutions and galleries around the world, solidifying her place in the Black art canon. With recent public art commissions and exhibitions, including a retrospective at the Benton Museum of Art and the Armory Center for the Arts, Saar continues to push boundaries and explore new artistic directions.

Looking ahead, Saar is excited about the prospect of settling into a new studio and reconnecting with old materials to inspire her future creations. With a sense of liberation and excitement, she is eager to explore new possibilities and delve into the creative process without constraints or preconceived notions.

Alison Saar’s artistic journey is a testament to the power of creativity, resilience, and the enduring influence of Black art in shaping cultural narratives. Her work continues to inspire and provoke thought, highlighting the importance of representation, history, and storytelling in the art world.
