Chip Roy Throws Hat in the Ring for Texas Attorney General
On Thursday, Rep. Chip Roy made a splash by announcing his candidacy for Texas attorney general, aiming to take the reins from Ken Paxton in a Republican primary that is already brimming with contenders.
Roy, a prominent member of the Freedom Caucus, has had a rocky relationship with various leaders in his party, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and former President Donald Trump. His political tenure has been marked by a willingness to challenge the status quo, as evidenced by his refusal to participate in efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. In a move that raised eyebrows, he criticized Trump for what he deemed “clearly impeachable conduct.” This dissent did not endear him to the former president, especially after Roy chose to support Florida Governor Ron DeSantis during the 2024 primaries.
After Trump regained the presidency, Roy attempted to mend fences but quickly reverted to being a critic by opposing Trump’s proposal to raise the debt ceiling. While Roy contends that the tensions between him and Trump have been overstated, ongoing conflicts suggest otherwise. Trump has even hinted at the possibility of Roy facing a primary challenge.
The discord doesn’t stop there; Roy has clashed with Johnson over Republican legislative efforts that he believes fail to impose adequate restrictions on government spending. This includes a notable battle over the party’s flagship initiative, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.
Roy’s campaign launch coincides with a politically charged atmosphere in Texas, particularly surrounding a contentious fight over newly drawn congressional maps that could potentially hand Republicans an additional five seats as they head into the 2026 midterms. The Texas House recently greenlit these new maps, following a protracted struggle that saw a group of Democratic lawmakers leave the state in an attempt to postpone the vote. Final approval of the maps is anticipated this week.
In a campaign video, Roy warned that “the Texas of our dreams is under assault” by “radical Democrats,” “open border politicians,” and “faceless corporations and the Chinese Communist Party.” His rhetoric underscores the increasingly polarized political climate in Texas.
Joining Roy in the race for Texas’s top law enforcement position will be several other candidates, as Paxton himself is not sitting idle—he is challenging Sen. John Cornyn in the primary. Paxton, a fervent Trump supporter, is no stranger to controversy, having faced criminal charges and impeachment proceedings, not to mention a very public rift with his wife, a member of the Texas Senate, over what she describes as “biblical grounds.”
