Chicago Violence Overview

This past weekend, Chicago witnessed 27 shooting incidents, tragically resulting in four fatalities. While this figure denotes a relative improvement when compared to prior years, it still surpasses the numbers observed during the pre-pandemic era. Last year’s weekend record had reached 40 victims, and the year before, a jaw-dropping 72 individuals were shot over the same period. To put this into broader context, the 2025 numbers exceed those reported in pre-COVID times, including 20 in 2019, 21 in 2018, and 16 in 2015, according to HeyJackass, a site dedicated to tracking Chicago gun violence using both official and public data.

Interestingly, the Chicago Police Department reported no incidents classified as mass shootings this weekend—defined as scenarios in which four or more individuals are hit in a single event.

The Chicago Police Department released detailed information regarding the incidents:

It’s important to note that the figures presented by HeyJackass include shootings on expressways within city limits, an aspect the CPD does not factor into its statistics, as the Illinois State Police investigate those incidents. For statistical clarity, the site defines “weekend” as spanning from noon on Friday to 6 a.m. on Monday, while CPD employs a more restrictive definition, designating it as 6 p.m. on Friday to midnight on Sunday. While these numbers serve as a snapshot, they may fluctuate as investigations continue and as victims’ conditions change.
