Hollywood Stars Unite Against Censorship in Defense of Free Speech

In a significant show of solidarity, prominent figures in Hollywood, including Tom Hanks, Jennifer Aniston, Meryl Streep, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jason Bateman, and Martin Short, have jointly signed an open letter published in collaboration with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). This letter protests Disney’s recent decision to remove late-night host Jimmy Kimmel’s show from its programming schedule, raising alarms about the implications for Americans’ rights to free expression.

Call to Action for Free Speech

The letter articulates concerns regarding the ongoing attempts to intimidate artists, journalists, and other public figures into silence, stating that such actions “strike at the heart of what it means to live in a free country.” It concludes with a rallying cry for all Americans to stand up in defense of their right to voice their opinions without fear of retribution.

A Modern-Day McCarthyism?

Anthony D. Romero, the executive director of the ACLU and the letter’s organizer, expressed that current events mirror a modern-day McCarthy era. He stated, “We are confronting the type of heavy-handed government censorship that our Constitution rightfully prohibits. The silencing of Jimmy Kimmel and the bullying of media outlets through lawsuits and threats to their licenses evoke dark memories of the 1950s.” He emphasized the necessity for collective action, reminding the public that mobilizing together can create a powerful voice that demands to be heard.

Broad Spectrum of Support

The letter has garnered signatures from a diverse array of artists, including Ariana DeBose, Jane Fonda, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Regina King, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Diego Luna, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Natalie Portman, demonstrating widespread concern about the chilling effects of censorship in the entertainment industry.

The Context Behind the Controversy

Disney’s decision to suspend Kimmel’s popular late-night program “indefinitely” follows a backlash from Nexstar Media, one of the largest television station owners in the U.S. Nexstar announced its intention to pre-empt Kimmel’s show following controversial remarks made by the host regarding the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Furthermore, Sinclair Broadcast Group has echoed similar sentiments, indicating plans to keep Kimmel’s program off its airwaves as well.

Connections to Disney Productions

It’s noteworthy that some of the signatories have longstanding ties to Disney productions. For example, Martin Short is currently starring in the Hulu series “Only Murders in the Building,” alongside Meryl Streep. Additionally, both Florence Pugh and Julia Louis-Dreyfus featured in the recent Marvel film “Thunderbolts,” and Jamie Lee Curtis has a recurring part in FX’s “The Bear.” Actress Kathryn Hahn recently had a leading role in the Marvel miniseries “Agatha All Along,” demonstrating the interconnectedness of talent across projects under the Disney umbrella.
