The MacArthur Fellowship, also known as the “Genius Grant,” has recently been awarded to a diverse group of individuals, including four visual artists. The recipients of this prestigious award, which comes with a $800,000 cash prize administered over five years, were announced on October 1.

Among the visual artists honored this year are Justin Vivian Bond, Tony Cokes, Ebony G. Patterson, and Wendy Red Star. Each of these artists brings a unique perspective and creative vision to their work, earning them recognition for their exceptional talent and potential.

Justin Vivian Bond, a trans artist and cabaret performer, uses their art as a platform for activism and self-expression. Bond’s upbringing in Maryland instilled in them a passion for creating spaces of freedom and empowerment through performance.

Tony Cokes, based in Providence, Rhode Island, is known for his innovative time-based media practice that challenges societal norms and structures. His work often addresses issues such as structural racism, politics, and global militarism, using a blend of existing text, sounds, and footage to create thought-provoking art.

Ebony G. Patterson, originally from Jamaica and now based in Chicago, explores themes of postcolonialism and beauty in her multidisciplinary art practice. Patterson’s intricate and detailed works, which span various mediums including video, photography, and sculpture, delve into the complexities of race, gender, and colonialism.

Wendy Red Star, a visual artist of Apsáalooke/Crow heritage, uses her art to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about Native Americans. Through humor and a keen attention to detail, Red Star sheds light on obscured histories and traditions, inviting viewers to reconsider their perceptions.
