Morgan Stanley is gearing up to roll out cryptocurrency trading platforms for its retail customers via the E-Trade division—marking a pivotal shift within the wealth management sector.
The investment banking titan is collaborating with Zerohash, a startup in which Morgan Stanley also holds a stake. This partnership will oversee liquidity, custody, and settlement processes surrounding crypto transactions, as detailed in a memo obtained by CNBC.
“We are making significant progress toward launching crypto trading through a partner model for our E-Trade clients in the first half of 2026,” stated Jed Finn, head of wealth management at Morgan Stanley, in the memo.
According to Finn, the firm is bracing for a future where affluent clients anticipate having their traditional and digital assets managed from a unified platform. He highlights that the bank is constructing a “robust wallet infrastructure” to serve as the custodian of digital assets, which is crucial to its broader strategy.
“Enabling clients to trade cryptocurrencies is merely the beginning,” he emphasized.
The firm envisions not only safeguarding crypto assets but also accommodating tokenized versions of conventional financial instruments. Tokenization refers to the process of creating digital representations of cash, stocks, bonds, and real estate on blockchain technology—something Finn believes will “significantly disrupt” the wealth management landscape.
“Tokenized cash substitutes can initiate interest accrual from the moment they arrive in the wallet,” Finn noted. “Following this, we can expect other asset classes to pursue similar efficiencies.”
“We recognize vast potential in the cryptocurrency realm—not solely regarding crypto investments for our clientele but also concerning Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and broader tokenization opportunities,” he concluded.
