Queens District Attorney’s Office Introduces Kimi, the Comfort Dog

The Queens District Attorney’s Office has introduced a new member to their team, and she is already making a big impact. Kimi, a 2-year-old Labrador retriever mix, has been enlisted as a “comfort dog” to help victims and witnesses open up to prosecutors in Queens. This adorable pup is providing much-needed support to those who have experienced traumatic events, including children and women who may find it difficult to share their stories.

Trained by Canine Companions for Independence, Kimi is well-equipped to ease the stress and anxiety of those she encounters. By building rapport with victims and witnesses, Kimi is able to create a safe space for them to open up and share their experiences. Whether accompanying individuals to a medical examination, an interview room, or a courthouse, Kimi’s presence has already proven to be invaluable in helping people feel more comfortable and at ease.

According to Jessica Reiss, a manager at Canine Companions for Independence, Kimi has been successful in cases where individuals have had trouble revealing the details of their experiences. By engaging with the dog, victims and witnesses have been able to overcome their hesitations and share important information with prosecutors.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz has praised Kimi for her work in helping survivors and witnesses navigate through the prosecutor’s office and the courthouse. Katz emphasized the importance of providing a comforting presence for vulnerable individuals as they recount their traumatic events.

Kimi, who underwent six months of intensive training before joining the Queens DA’s office, is the first canine to work for any district attorney’s office in New York City. Her training included learning over 40 commands, such as opening doors, pushing buttons, and giving a “fist bump” with her nose. She even has a special law enforcement badge that she proudly wears around her neck, along with a blue bandanna.

Jennifer Naiburg, Queen’s Chief Assistant District Attorney, has witnessed firsthand the positive impact that Kimi has had on reducing anxiety levels for witnesses and victims. With studies showing the benefits of pets in reducing anxiety, Kimi’s presence in the courtroom has been a welcome addition for all involved.

Kimi’s role as a comfort dog is not only unique but also essential in providing support to those who have experienced trauma. Her ability to connect with individuals and provide a sense of comfort and security is truly remarkable. As she continues to assist victims and witnesses in Queens, Kimi’s presence serves as a reminder of the power of compassion and empathy in the criminal justice system.
