You Can Recycle Cigarette Butts!

Cigarette butts are a major environmental hazard as they are not fully biodegradable and can linger in the environment for decades. These discarded butts contain plastic filters that do not break down and release harmful plastic microfibers into the environment. In addition, they leach chemicals and heavy metals, posing a threat to wildlife and waterways.

To tackle this issue, TerraCycle has introduced a Cigarette Waste Recycling Program that offers a solution for recycling cigarette waste. This program accepts extinguished cigarettes, filters, tobacco pouches, packaging, rolling paper, and ash. By participating in this program, individuals can contribute to cleaning up their neighborhoods, beaches, and streets while also helping the planet.

For those interested in joining the program, it is important to ensure that the collected waste is properly stored in airtight containers to reduce odors. Businesses and community locations can also purchase aluminum cigarette waste receptacles to collect butts in high-traffic areas. Once the containers are filled, the waste can be shipped to TerraCycle for recycling using a free shipping label.

The recycled cigarette waste is transformed into industrial products, such as plastic pallets, with the help of funding from Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company. This initiative not only helps in reducing waste but also creates a sustainable solution for managing cigarette butt pollution.

To learn more about TerraCycle’s Cigarette Waste Recycling Program or explore other free recycling programs, visit their website. By taking small steps like recycling cigarette waste, individuals can make a positive impact on the environment and contribute to a cleaner, healthier planet.
