The Wellin Museum of Art presents an exciting new exhibition that delves into the transformative power of storytelling on a grand scale.

Jamea Richmond-Edwards, the celebrated Detroit artist known for her innovative mixed-media works, is making waves with her latest project. Titled Another World and Yet the Same, this exhibition showcases an ambitious narrative piece that transports audiences on an allegorical journey to Antarctica – a quest for a new paradigm of freedom and equity. Richmond-Edwards’ inspirations are eclectic, weaving together threads from biblical tales like Exodus, the phantasmagorical themes of jazz musician Sun Ra, and the exploration of mythical realms.

The exhibition resonates with the title derived from Joseph Hall’s 17th-century dystopian text, Mundus alter et idem, which recounts an imagined venture towards the southern oceans of Africa. This framing reflects the artist’s deep engagement with potential societal shifts, presenting a kaleidoscope of challenges and opportunities. The resulting mythos is at once timeless and strikingly relevant in contemporary discourse.

Jamea Richmond-Edwards: Another World and Yet the Same is curated by Alexander Jarman, the Assistant Curator specializing in Exhibitions and Academic Outreach at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art at Hamilton College.

In conjunction with this solo exhibition, the Wellin Museum is proud to feature EXODUS, a group exhibition curated by Richmond-Edwards that pays tribute to her artistic mentors and contemporaries who have significantly influenced her creative practice. The exhibition presents works from notable artists such as Akili Ron Anderson, Wesley Clark, and others, establishing a vibrant network of artistic dialogue.
