Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell, disclosed in his new autobiography, The Royal Insider, that he facilitated Costner’s call to Diana, who found the proposition entertaining.
Burrell recounted: “Diana ultimately declined the chance to enter into the profession of her future daughter-in-law, Meghan, and pursue acting.”
“Costner proposed she take on a role in The Bodyguard II alongside him.”
“I connected the call from Mr. Costner to her in the sitting room and heard bouts of laughter as she said, ‘But I can’t sing! What would I be expected to do? I’m not sure, but yes, OK, send it, and I promise I will have a look.’
“At the end of the call, she told me he had presented her with the lead role in a follow-up to the blockbuster which starred Whitney Houston as the lead character.”
“In this new storyline, she would portray a princess, with Kevin serving as her bodyguard, protecting her life. He assured her it would be handled tastefully and that he would take care of her.”

Costner remarked that Diana, who tragically passed away in 1997, was initially enthusiastic about the film, telling him, “My life’s about to change.”
He recalled that during a subsequent conversation, they even discussed a potential kissing scene.
The Bodyguard became one of the highest-grossing films of the early 1990s, amassing over $400 million globally.
The soundtrack alone sold more than 42 million copies, setting a world record, primarily thanks to Whitney Houston’s</a) rendition of Dolly Parton’s hit I Will Always Love You.
In the original film, Houston starred as a singer, a role originally intended for Diana Ross. Her outstanding performance and the film’s success briefly elevated her to one of the highest-paid actors in the mid-1990s.

Whitney Houston played a pivotal role in making the original movie a worldwide sensation.
It is said that the sequel’s concept emerged during a trip to China with Diana, Costner, Sarah Ferguson (Duchess of York), and David Tang, a prominent Hong Kong restaurateur.
In recent years, Costner has reflected on his relationship with the Royal Family, which soured following Diana’s untimely death.
He shared on The Howard Stern Show that approximately a year after Diana’s passing, it became public knowledge that he was working on the sequel with her, leading to a strain in relations with the Royal Family.
“They kind of turned on me a little bit,” he recalled. “And it became rather contentious over time. I eventually stepped back, but things just kept getting messier.”
