Former President Trump is set to hold discussions with Democratic congressional leaders this week, as lawmakers approach a crucial September 30 deadline to prevent a government shutdown.

According to a White House official and a source familiar with the preparations, a meeting is on the calendar for Trump, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).

Punchbowl News initially reported that the meeting is anticipated to occur on Thursday, as confirmed by various news sources.

Democratic leaders from New York had reached out to Trump on Saturday, insisting on a meeting – just one day after nearly all Senate Democrats rejected a stopgap funding proposal intended to maintain government funding at current levels through November 21.

In their letter to the leader, Schumer and Jeffries stated, “We write to demand a meeting regarding your decision to block federal government funding due to the Republican priority of undermining healthcare for Americans.”

They have accused Republican leaders – allegedly following Trump’s lead – of “consistently” avoiding “bipartisan discussions to keep the government running” and stated it is “your responsibility to meet with us directly.”

A White House spokesperson responded to this appeal, stating, “Dems walked away from a bipartisan negotiation on the [continuing resolution].”

“This letter reflects a sense of desperation,” the spokesperson further commented.
