Authorities in upstate New York have rescued a large number of neglected animals from a deplorable residence, uncovering exotic species such as peacocks, wallabies, tarantulas, and an Australian bearded dragon lizard.

Linda Hickey, aged 62, faces charges of animal neglect following the horrifying findings in Warwick, where more than 100 other animals were discovered in appalling conditions last year, as reported by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office in a press release this past Tuesday.

“This incident underscores the significance of community collaboration in addressing animal neglect,” Sheriff Paul Arteta stated. “The commitment of the Warwick Valley Humane Society and Animal Nation enabled us to respond quickly and compassionately, providing these animals with a opportunity for recovery.”

Photos obtained by Mid-Hudson News show that the majority of the animals were housed in filthy, feces-infested cages, with rabbits suffering from matted and overgrown fur.

The investigation into Hickey’s residence on Old Dutch Hollow Road commenced last year following numerous community complaints, resulting in the removal of 106 animals from the property by animal rescue crews.

On August 12, deputies executed an arrest warrant related to the 2024 investigation, which led to a search of the house last week, the sheriff’s office confirmed.

“In total, 66 animals were confiscated, including rabbits, geese, parrots, a raccoon, tortoises, prairie dogs, a starling, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, hamsters, ferrets, degus, a goat, bearded dragons, a snake, a hermit crab, a tarantula, peacocks, a wallaby, dogs, ducks, and cats,” authorities disclosed.

The conditions inside the Warwick home were described as littered with feces and soiled rags, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Orange County Sheriffs Office

Just two days later, on September 18, an additional 18 animals were rescued from the same premises, the sheriff announced.

All rescued animals are receiving veterinary attention, officials stated.

Currently, Hickey has been charged, and local building inspectors have condemned the house.
