David Koma, a seasoned designer with nearly 15 years of experience in the fashion industry, made a bold decision this season by opting out of a traditional fashion show or presentation. While some speculated that this choice was influenced by his new role at Blumarine, Koma revealed that his focus was on creating something truly special for the brand’s upcoming anniversary in February.

As I sat down with Koma in his Paris showroom, he shared his inspiration for the collection, which was drawn from the work of Australian photographer Layly Jeffress. Specifically, Koma found inspiration in Jeffress’s studio portraits of birds, choosing the hummingbird for its energy and the swallow for its sense of family and togetherness.

The collection was characterized by extreme cuts, decadence, and opulence, with a focus on marabou feathers sourced from America. Pieces like a balconette bra and mini skort in fluorescent yellow, paired with a feather-trimmed tulle veil, exemplified the extravagant and luxurious aesthetic of the collection. A pale blue crystal-embellished bodysuit was paired with a sleeveless hoodie adorned with marabou feathers, while a black mini-dress featured intricate pink feather detailing.

Koma’s signature style of powerful, self-determined femininity was evident throughout the collection. From slouchy-cut tailoring accented with metal chains and embroidered flowers to striking eveningwear in black, each piece exuded a sense of confidence and allure.

In a time when the fashion industry is reevaluating its approach to expressing femininity and empowerment, David Koma remains a steadfast advocate for bold, self-assured style. While his decision to forgo a traditional fashion show may have raised eyebrows, the magic he has created on the rail speaks for itself. Stay tuned for what promises to be a stunning anniversary collection from this visionary designer.
