A close family source has confirmed to TMZ Sports that Johnson passed away this week.

While details about the cause of death remain unclear, reports suggest he was battling mental health issues, possibly linked to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which he found insurmountable.

The source emphasized that in the time leading up to his death, Johnson was dedicated to helping others both on and off the field, which he regarded as his true calling.

He was 45 years old at the time of his passing.

Drafted in the fourth round of the 2001 NFL Draft by the Bengals, Johnson’s career took off after a slow start in his first two seasons.

In his breakout season at age 24, he rushed for 957 yards and nine touchdowns. Over the subsequent three seasons, he amassed more than 4,000 yards and 36 touchdowns.

Johnson’s professional career concluded after a stint with the Detroit Lions in 2008.

Before his NFL journey, he shone as a player at Auburn University, even clinching the SEC Player of the Year title.

After his professional career, Johnson established a foundation that aimed to support children and families through community-centric programs.

Bengals president Mike Brown expressed his sorrow following Johnson’s passing, stating, “Rudi was a remarkable individual and an outstanding running back for us.”

“His reliability and productivity were hallmarks of his game, but beyond that, he was beloved by teammates who regarded him as a dear friend. His loss deeply saddens us.”

Rest in Peace.
