NBA fans around the world are mourning the loss of legendary center Dikembe Mutombo, who passed away at the age of 58 after a long battle with brain cancer. Known for his iconic finger wag taunt and shot-blocking prowess, Mutombo left an indelible mark on the NBA during his 18-year career, playing for teams like the Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets, and Atlanta Hawks.

Renowned NASCAR insider Claire B. Lang took to social media to express her sorrow at Mutombo’s passing, remembering him as one of the greatest defensive players in NBA history. Lang recalled a memorable interview with Mutombo in Las Vegas, where despite his towering height of 7 feet 2 inches, he made her feel at ease and treated her with kindness.

Mutombo’s son, Ryan Mutombo, also shared a heartfelt message following his father’s death, describing him as a hero and a beacon of light. Mutombo’s impact extended beyond the basketball court, as he was known for his humanitarian work and dedication to helping others, particularly in Africa.

Tributes poured in from across the sports world, with NBA legend Michael Jordan expressing his condolences to Mutombo’s family. Jordan praised Mutombo for not only his basketball skills but also for his philanthropic efforts and positive influence on the world. Jordan, who co-owns the 23XI Racing team with Denny Hamlin, shared a special bond with Mutombo and will miss his infectious laugh.

23XI Racing, founded by Jordan and Hamlin in 2020, operates full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series and recently unveiled its new headquarters, The Airspeed, in May 2024. The team’s commitment to excellence and community outreach reflects the values that Mutombo embodied throughout his life.
