The University for the Creative Arts in England has taken a classic literary character and brought her to life in a whole new way. Elizabeth Bennet, the protagonist of Jane Austen’s beloved novel “Pride and Prejudice,” has been transformed into a digital interactive avatar named Lizzy. Created in collaboration with artificial intelligence company StarPal, Lizzy is currently on display at the Jane Austen’s House museum in Hampshire, England until mid-December.

According to Sophy Smith, the director of games and creative technology at UCA, the development of this technology has the potential to revolutionize experiences in museums, heritage sites, and education. Students now have the opportunity to learn about literature by engaging directly with characters like Lizzy, rather than just relying on text-based resources. The avatar has been designed to embody the human qualities of Austen’s character as described in the novel, such as empathy and humor. Each interaction with Lizzy promises a unique experience as the avatar’s conversational abilities continue to evolve.

To create Lizzy, a variety of novels, manuscripts, and period-accurate information were utilized, with guidance from Jane Austen’s House. Additionally, students studying video games and digital fashion at UCA were responsible for designing Lizzy’s hair and wardrobe, inspired by Regency-era styles. Lizzie Dunford, the director of Jane Austen’s House, expressed excitement about the project, highlighting the innovative approach to accessing literary and cultural heritage.

This modern interpretation of Elizabeth Bennet adds to the long legacy of adaptations and reimaginings of “Pride and Prejudice.” Jane Austen’s 1813 novel continues to capture the hearts of readers worldwide and has been the inspiration for countless film and television adaptations. Smith emphasizes Lizzy’s strong personality and envisions her as a new friend for those who engage with her.

The integration of artificial intelligence and interactive technology into the realm of literature opens up exciting possibilities for engaging with classic characters and stories in a whole new light. With Lizzy at the forefront, visitors to the Jane Austen’s House museum have the opportunity to interact with one of literature’s most beloved heroines in a way that brings her character to life like never before.
