U.S. Department of Commerce Delays Nvidia’s AI Chip Sales in China

The U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick recently approved chipmakers like Nvidia to resume selling certain AI chips in China. However, despite the green light given, the department is reportedly causing delays in the process. According to a report by Reuters, Nvidia is still waiting for a license to sell its H20 AI chips in the Chinese market.

The delay in issuing licenses is attributed to a backlog of applications at the U.S. Department of Commerce. The department is facing internal turmoil, including a shortage of staff and breakdown in communications with the industry. This backlog is affecting companies like Nvidia who are seeking approval to sell their products internationally.

Meanwhile, national security experts are raising concerns about the sale of Nvidia’s H20 AI chips to China. They are urging the Trump administration to impose restrictions on these sales citing national security risks. The debate over the potential risks associated with selling advanced technology to China is ongoing amidst the delays in licensing approvals.
