In 2025, the future of liberty faces a major threat that has been looming larger since the rise of populism around the world, particularly with the election of figures like Donald Trump. While populism of both the right and left poses dangers, the specific concern that needs to be addressed is the frequent association of populism with what is often labeled as the “libertarian right.” This identification could have damaging consequences for the ideals of liberty and individual freedom.

Donald Trump, for instance, has started using the word “freedom” more frequently in his rhetoric, which may lead to the perception that his actions are somehow aligned with libertarian principles. However, the potential economic and geopolitical catastrophes that could arise from populist policies, such as tariffs and military interventions, are not in line with the philosophy of liberty. These actions could set back the cause of liberty for decades, if not addressed.

One example that highlights the complexity of this issue is the case of Xavier Milei, the president of Argentina who identifies as an anarcho-capitalist or minarchist. While Milei has shown economic competence in his policies, he has also expressed support for far-right and illiberal populist politicians. This mix of ideologies could further blur the line between libertarianism and illiberalism, damaging the reputation of libertarian principles.

The danger of this association between populism and libertarianism is that it could lead to a misunderstanding of what true liberty entails. As John Maynard Keynes famously said, ideas matter in the long run, and the misidentification of populist actions as libertarian could have lasting consequences. It is crucial to separate the principles of liberty from the actions of populist leaders in order to preserve the future of liberty for generations to come.

In conclusion, the threat to liberty in 2025 comes not just from populism itself, but from the potential misidentification of populist actions as being aligned with libertarian principles. It is essential to recognize the dangers posed by populist policies and to ensure that the true ideals of liberty and individual freedom are upheld and protected. Only by doing so can we safeguard the future of liberty for all. The drawing created by DALL-E, attempting to imitate the style of Maupassant in “The Inn,” strayed significantly from the vivid imagery depicted in Maupassant’s words. While Maupassant’s writing painted a detailed and immersive picture of a dangerous pass in the Alps, DALL-E’s illustration fell short in capturing the same level of intensity and emotion.

In Maupassant’s story, the description of the treacherous mountain pass evoked a sense of danger and suspense, with every detail contributing to the ominous atmosphere. The rugged terrain, the looming cliffs, and the precarious path all worked together to create a scene filled with tension and foreboding. Readers could almost feel the biting cold and hear the howling wind as they navigated the hazardous route alongside the characters.

In contrast, DALL-E’s rendition of the scene lacked the same sense of urgency and drama. The drawing failed to convey the same level of danger and excitement that Maupassant’s words had brought to life. The imagery was flat and lacking in depth, with none of the nuances that made the original passage so compelling.

Despite the artist’s attempt to recreate Maupassant’s style, the drawing fell short of capturing the essence of the story. The visual representation failed to evoke the same emotions and sensations that the written word had masterfully conveyed. In the end, the drawing remained a pale imitation of Maupassant’s powerful storytelling.

Overall, while DALL-E’s drawing may have attempted to pay homage to Maupassant’s work, it ultimately missed the mark in capturing the essence of the original story. The vivid imagery and evocative language of Maupassant’s writing proved to be a challenge to translate into visual form, highlighting the unique power of words to create immersive and unforgettable experiences for readers.
