Astronomers have made a startling discovery in the Andromeda galaxy – a massive star quietly collapsed into a black hole without the expected fanfare of a supernova explosion. This unexpected event was first observed in 2014, providing crucial data for understanding the different ways in which black holes can form after the death of a giant star.

Led by astronomer Kishalay De of Columbia University, the research team uncovered evidence of the star’s disappearance in archival data that had gone unnoticed for years. Typically, when a massive star reaches the end of its life cycle, its core collapses, triggering a supernova explosion. However, in some cases, the explosion fizzles out, and the material falls back onto the core, forming a black hole in a less dramatic process.

The newly discovered event in the Andromeda galaxy, known as M31-2014-DS1, was a supergiant star that suddenly increased in brightness in 2014 before dimming significantly by 2023. This dimming was observed across all wavelengths, indicating a cessation of fusion within the star. The team’s analysis suggests that the star collapsed directly into a black hole without the expected supernova explosion.

This unique event challenges previous assumptions about the fate of massive stars and highlights the complexity of interactions between gravity, gas pressure, and shock waves within dying stars. The resulting black hole is estimated to have a mass five times that of the Sun, with an event horizon approximately 30 kilometers across.

The discovery of this quiet transformation in the Andromeda galaxy, following a similar event in a different galaxy in 2010, suggests that failed supernovae leading to black hole formation may be more common than previously thought. The ability to detect such subtle events in the Universe is improving, shedding light on the diverse pathways through which massive stars meet their end.

The research findings have been published in the journal Science, presenting a new perspective on the evolution of massive stars and the formation of black holes in the cosmos. This discovery underscores the importance of ongoing astronomical observations in unraveling the mysteries of the Universe and expanding our understanding of stellar deaths.
