Vanuatu Earthquake Survivor’s Harrowing Tale

Vanuatu was hit by a devastating 7.3 magnitude earthquake, leaving many in peril. Lester Lowane, a survivor, shared his harrowing experience from his hospital bed.

Lowane recounted being inches away from being crushed when the earthquake struck while he was out shopping with his mother. The building they were in collapsed, trapping them inside.

Despite being knocked unconscious and sustaining a jaw fracture, Lowane managed to find a pocket of space to sit up in. He made phone calls for help, eventually being rescued after 24 hours of being trapped.

Dr. Sale Tamata Vurobaravu described Lowane’s condition upon arrival at the hospital, covered in white concrete dust. Fortunately, Lowane’s mother and another survivor escaped with minor injuries.

Lowane expressed gratitude for the rescue efforts and the support he received from various organizations and governments. He is now focused on physical and mental healing, looking forward to pursuing his studies in Aviation Management through an Australian scholarship.

The aftermath of the earthquake continues to be felt in Vanuatu, with ongoing aftershocks and displacement of thousands. The emergency response is focused on clearing debris and restoring essential services.

Despite the challenges, the resilience of the people of Vanuatu shines through as they work towards recovery and rebuilding.
