The United States has a long history of oil and gas exploration, dating back to the 1850s. Over the years, millions of oil and gas wells have been drilled across the country, many of which have been abandoned and left unplugged. These abandoned wells, known as undocumented orphan wells (UOWs), pose a significant environmental and safety risk as they can leak methane, oil, and other chemicals into the air and potentially contaminate water sources. The Bureau of Land Management estimates that there are still 130,000 of these unplugged wells scattered throughout the US, while industry organizations believe the number could be as high as 740,000.

Efforts to find and plug these orphan wells have been slow and laborious, with researchers spending countless hours poring over old maps in search of well locations. However, a new artificial intelligence (AI) model developed by researchers from the US Department of Energy’s Berkeley Lab may revolutionize the process. The AI model, trained on over 100 years worth of maps, is capable of identifying previously undiscovered orphan wells within 10 meters of their actual locations.

The researchers detailed their process for training the AI in a recent article published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology. They trained the AI to identify a specific symbol used to mark oil and gas wells on topographical maps. A human data labeller spent 40 hours manually identifying examples of these symbols to create a training set for the AI model. The researchers had to account for other symbols that could be mistaken for well symbols, such as numbers or similar circular patterns, to prevent false positives.

Once the AI was fully trained, it was unleashed on thousands of maps from four oil-rich counties in California and Nevada. The model identified 1,301 potentially undocumented orphan wells, of which 29 were verified using aerial and satellite imagery. In cases where wells were not visible from above, researchers conducted field tests using magnetometers to detect buried metal pipes, verifying an additional 15 wells.

The researchers are now looking to combine the predictive power of AI with other modern technologies, such as sensor-equipped drones, to further accelerate the detection and plugging of orphan wells. Drones equipped with magnetometers could quickly deploy to areas where aerial detection is not possible, while drones with methane sensors and hyperspectral cameras could detect leaks and methane plumes that are invisible to the naked eye.

Overall, the researchers believe that AI has the potential to revolutionize the process of identifying and plugging orphan wells, ultimately reducing the environmental and safety risks associated with these abandoned sites. With further refinement of their methods, the researchers hope to uncover even more undocumented orphan wells and prevent further pollution and contamination.
