Colman Domingo takes his hosting duties to heart. At a pre-Met Gala event at the Faena Hotel in West Chelsea on Saturday night, guests were personally welcomed by Domingo, who led them onto the dance floor with a warm hug and a spin.
The invitation encouraged attendees to embrace bold styles with the phrase “Put That Sh*t On!” Domingo himself wore a striking feathered jacket paired with a halter blouson, a custom piece by Patricio Campillo, a designer from Mexico City. “It took us 20 days, working six days a week, to sew each rooster feather individually,” Campillo shared with Vogue. “Perfection was our goal.”
Upon arrival, guests had their phone cameras covered with a gold sticker, marked with “Xo Colman,” to encourage uninhibited dancing. Among the attendees were Natasha Lyonne, Instagram’s Evan Mosseri and Eva Chen, and designers Alessandro Michele, Haider Ackermann, and Marc Jacobs with his husband Char Defrancesco. Emma Thynn Weymouth, known for her role on Bravo’s Ladies of London, wore a white gown with a feathered train that extended ten feet across the room.
The evening’s signature drink, The Catwalk, crafted in partnership with Don Julio Tequila, inspired many attendees to treat the dance floor as their runway. Notable figures such as Meghan Fahy, Leo Woodall, Nina Dobrev, Gabrielle Union, Heidi Klum, and Coco Rocha joined in as DJs Spinderella and Lina provided the beats. The stage was later handed over to singer Jacob Lusk, who delivered a powerful rendition of Bennie & The Jets, offering a rare moment free from social media documentation.
During a toast, Domingo expressed, “We’re here tonight to celebrate the arts in all its forms, and all of you here that can change the world through your art. Tonight I want you all to meet a new person, because through this community and connection with one another, you have the power to change the world.”
Looking ahead, Domingo is preparing to release a new film, a science fiction thriller directed by Steven Spielberg. There were even whispers that Spielberg might have been present at the event. Cheers!
