In the vibrant borough of Redbridge, located in northeastern London, a community-driven arts initiative has turned a standard electric truck into a stunning piece of mobile art. Adorned with elaborately designed metal panels, the touring exhibit called ā€œHome Away from Homeā€ draws inspiration from the vividly decorated hand-painted trucks seen across South Asia, particularly in regions of Pakistan and India.

The project ā€œHome Away from Homeā€ serves as the grand finale of a more comprehensive series known as Other Worlds, orchestrated by Colours of Redbridge. This local charity is a participant in a wider initiative from Arts Council England called Creative People and Places, which aims to enhance arts and culture access for communities with lower participation in mainstream cultural activities.

The intricately designed truck was ā€œcrafted by local communities to symbolize their interpretation of home, delving into the rich heritage and identity of Redbridge, East London,ā€ as noted by the organization. ā€œCustom panels depict various themes, including music, sports, beloved local sites, animals, and favorite foods—all vital aspects of the lives experienced by community residents.ā€

Accomplished truck artist Abid Bhai engineered the panels in Pakistan before sending them to the U.K. There, local blacksmith Felicity Jones integrated the colorful designs onto the truck’s sides, roof, and even its wheels. Additional collaborations involved London-based artists Momtaz Begum-Hossain, Sheyamali Sudesh, and Bailes+Light. ā€œI’ve thoroughly enjoyed leading community metal workshops, where participants infuse their ideas into unique panel designs,ā€ Jones shares. ā€œWitnessing individuals grow in confidence and express their creativity through metalwork is truly rewarding.ā€

Both Colours of Redbridge and Creative People and Places focus on dismantling barriers to artistic expression while genuinely listening to the needs of the residents. The primary aim is to foster and maintain healthier, happier communities. Through public involvement, Colours of Redbridge also strives to mitigate significant challenges residents face, including the cost of living, health and wellness, and developing skills for employment.
