Gowanus Open Studios made a triumphant return for its 28th edition over the weekend, showcasing the talent of over 400 artists, organizations, and businesses in the Brooklyn neighborhood. Hosted by the nonprofit organization Arts Gowanus, the free public event took place along Pacific Street to 19th Street, with a convenient digital map guiding visitors through the various locations on Saturday and Sunday.

Executive Director Johnny Thornton of Arts Gowanus, also the owner of Established Gallery in Brooklyn, noted that this year’s event was much smoother in terms of preparation compared to previous years, as there were no added stress factors like flooding. Last year, a tropical cyclone caused significant damage to artist studios in the area, leading to the destruction of numerous artworks just weeks before the event. To support artists who suffered losses due to the storm, this year’s Open Studios event also served as a fundraising opportunity.

The theme for the 2024 event was “Gowanus Under Construction,” reflecting the ongoing gentrification of the historically industrial neighborhood with the rise of residential high-rises and mixed-use developments. Despite the transformation, there is a strong sense of community and neighborhood identity among residents and artists, as noted by Arts
