AARP issues urgent call on Medicare drug costs

American seniors are facing a significant disparity in prescription drug prices compared to patients in other countries, according to a recent report by AARP. The study focused on 25 of the top-selling brand-name drugs in the U.S. that contribute to over $100 billion in Medicare spending annually. The findings reveal that prices for these medications have surged by 81% on average in the U.S. following their launch, while dropping by 13% on average in 19 comparable countries.

One striking example highlighted in the report is Enbrel, a popular treatment for rheumatoid arthritis. The price of Enbrel in the U.S. skyrocketed by 873% post-launch, whereas it decreased by 27% internationally. This discrepancy has led to significant financial strain on Medicare beneficiaries, costing them billions each year.

Another medication, Januvia, used to manage diabetes, saw a 126% price increase domestically but a 40% decrease in comparison countries. These escalating prices are putting pressure on the approximately 25 million Americans enrolled in Medicare Part D coverage.

The report emphasizes the importance of drug price negotiation, which has already started yielding results with the first ten Medicare-negotiated medications in 2026. As the federal subsidy program supporting standalone Medicare drug plans is set to expire after 2026, it will likely lead to higher premiums for beneficiaries.

AARP’s Senior Vice President of Government Affairs, Bill Sweeney, underscored the challenges that seniors face with rising healthcare costs despite efforts to reform drug pricing. The organization estimates that Medicare could save nearly $200 billion over five years by aligning drug prices with those in other countries.

To mitigate the impact of rising premiums, Medicare has implemented negotiated prices for high-cost drugs starting in 2026, with plans to expand the program to cover more medications in 2027. Additionally, most-favored-nation agreements with drugmakers are projected to generate substantial savings over the next decade.

As beneficiaries navigate the changes in premiums and coverage, AARP advises them to compare standalone plans with Medicare Advantage options during the open enrollment period to find the most cost-effective and comprehensive coverage. The ultimate goal is to ensure that seniors have access to affordable medications and healthcare services as they make critical enrollment decisions.

In conclusion, the evolving landscape of prescription drug pricing and Medicare coverage underscores the importance of informed decision-making and ongoing advocacy for affordable healthcare for older Americans.
