Lisa Ann Walter, who launched her career in the late 1980s as a stand-up comedian, has transitioned to notable film and television roles, most prominently on the acclaimed ABC series “Abbott Elementary.” She is still active on the stand-up circuit, frequently selling out shows across the country.
After years in the industry, Walter is set to release her first stand-up special, having inked a deal with Hulu to premiere her debut hour in 2026.
She took the reins as director for the special, which was filmed at the Helium Comedy Club in Philadelphia. The project is produced by Art & Industry and includes executive producers such as Walter herself, her “Abbott” co-star Sheryl Lee Ralph, Michelle Caputo, and Shannon Hartman.
In “Abbott Elementary,” Walter portrays the no-nonsense teacher Melissa Schemmenti. The show, which is currently enjoying its fifth season on ABC, was created by Quinta Brunson and has become the network’s most popular comedy. Walter shares the screen with Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Janelle James, Chris Perfetti, Ralph, and William Stanford Davis.
Before her role in “Abbott,” Walter co-created, produced, and starred in several network sitcoms, including Fox’s “My Wildest Dreams,” ABC’s “Life’s Work,” and NBC’s “Dance Your Ass Off.” Her film roles include playing Chessy in “The Parent Trap” alongside Dennis Quaid and portraying Bobbie in “Shall We Dance” with Richard Gere. Additionally, she has appeared in films such as “Bruce Almighty” featuring Jim Carrey and Jennifer Aniston, Steven Spielberg’s “War of the Worlds” starring Tom Cruise, and the action-comedy “Killers” alongside Ashton Kutcher. In 2011, she released a memoir titled “The Best Thing About My Ass Is That It’s Behind Me.”
Walter’s special will be a part of Hulu’s “Hularious” collection, which also includes comedic offerings from notable names like Jim Gaffigan, Ilana Glazer, Roy Wood Jr., Chris Distefano, Bill Burr, Jessica Kirson, Matteo Lane, Atsuko Okatsuka, Zarna Garg, Ralph Barbosa, Andrew Santino, and many others.
She is represented by Authentic, Gersh, and Innovative for her stand-up performances.
