Wisconsin state party chair Ben Wikler has received a significant endorsement as he vies for the position of Democratic National Committee chair. Stacey Abrams, the prominent Democratic figure from Georgia, announced on Monday that she is throwing her support behind Wikler in his bid for the leadership role.
In her statement to POLITICO, Abrams lauded Wikler as the ideal candidate for the DNC chairmanship, highlighting his track record of fighting against Republican control in Wisconsin and his ability to build strong coalitions. She emphasized the importance of year-round voter protection, smart organizing, and clear messaging in securing victories, especially in states where voting rights are under threat.
The endorsement from Abrams comes on the heels of the first official candidate gathering for the DNC elections, which are set to take place on Feb. 1. Wikler expressed his gratitude for Abrams’ endorsement, noting her inspirational work in Georgia and her role as a mentor and advisor.
In addition to endorsing Wikler for DNC chair, Abrams also threw her support behind Georgia Democrat Rep. Nikema Williams, who is seeking the position of Vice Chair for Civic Engagement and Voter Participation. The race for this position features a diverse slate of candidates, all of whom are people of color.
While the race for DNC chair is largely seen as a competition between Wikler and Ken Martin of Minnesota, both candidates share a commitment to implementing a year-round organizing strategy and reducing the party’s reliance on political consultants. Martin emphasized the need for the party to prioritize working families and demonstrate a genuine concern for their well-being.
At present, Martin has garnered the support of numerous Democratic leaders from southern states, while Wikler has secured endorsements from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and state party chairs from North Carolina and Michigan. The upcoming DNC candidate forum in Detroit, hosted by POLITICO, will provide another opportunity for the candidates to make their case to party insiders.
As the race for DNC leadership heats up, the endorsements and support from influential figures like Stacey Abrams will play a crucial role in shaping the future direction of the party. Both Wikler and Martin are focused on revitalizing the Democratic Party and connecting with voters on a more meaningful level.
