A new baby sloth is bringing smiles and warmth to Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown, Pennsylvania.
The tiny two-toed sloth, affectionately named Beanie’s Baby, made its first appearance to the public on Wednesday, as reported by 6ABC.
This little one, born in August and weighing just two pounds, inherits its name from its mother, Beanie, who was pregnant during her stay at Rhode Island’s Roger Williams Park Zoo.

“Beanie was transferred to our zoo while she was in the middle of her pregnancy, which is typically when moving them is safest; this allows for a smooth transition into their new environment before giving birth,” explained the Elmwood Park Zoo in a post on Instagram. Check out the full post here.
“We were aware of Beanie’s pregnancy when she arrived, enabling us to track her health closely during this period.”
The sex of the baby sloth has not been confirmed yet, as both male and female sloths exhibit similar external characteristics. It will require DNA testing to determine the gender, which will be conducted after the baby separates from its mother, usually around five months old.
