Adobe Animate Saved from Discontinuation After Customer Backlash
After facing intense backlash from its customers, Adobe has decided to put on hold its plan to discontinue Adobe Animate. The 2D animation software was initially slated for shutdown as part of the company’s increased focus on investments in AI.
The announcement of Adobe’s plan to discontinue Animate on Monday was met with incredulity, disappointment, and anger from users. Concerns were raised about the lack of alternatives that could match the functionality of Animate.
However, in a post on Wednesday, Adobe clarified that Animate would not be discontinued or removed. The software will remain available for both current and new customers, with no set deadline for its availability.
According to Adobe, Animate is now in maintenance mode for all customers, including individual, small business, and enterprise users. While no new features will be added, the company will continue to provide support, security updates, and bug fixes for the application.
One customer had even suggested that Adobe open source the software instead of abandoning it. The sentiment was echoed by many others, highlighting the importance of Animate to a significant portion of Adobe users.
Before the reversal of its decision, Adobe had announced that Animate would be discontinued on March 1, 2026. Enterprise customers were to receive support until March 1, 2029, while other users would have support until March 2027.
The company explained its initial decision to discontinue Animate in an FAQ, citing the evolution of technologies and the emergence of new platforms as reasons for the change.
Despite the initial plan to discontinue Animate, Adobe could not recommend a direct replacement for the software. Instead, it advised users with a Creative Cloud Pro plan to utilize other Adobe apps to replicate certain functionalities offered by Animate.
Some users have been suggesting alternative animation programs, such as Moho Animation and Toon Boom Harmony, as potential replacements for Animate.
Overall, Adobe’s reversal of its decision to discontinue Animate comes as a relief to many users who rely on the software for their animation needs. The move to place Animate in maintenance mode ensures that customers will continue to have access to the application and receive necessary support.
