Calls for Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg to step down escalated on Monday following his controversial decision to bring Daniel Penny to trial for Jordan Neely’s chokehold death.
The backlash began immediately after Penny was acquitted of negligent homicide charges.
“Time and time again, Alvin Bragg shows a disregard for reality and common sense – going after individuals like Daniel Penny while allowing criminals to freely walk the streets,” expressed a council member from Queens. “For the well-being of New Yorkers, the governor must intervene and remove him. This cannot go on.”
State Assemblyman Michael Tannousis (R-Staten Island) also joined in the criticism, accusing Bragg of “wasting taxpayer money” on the case.
“Penny was falsely accused and defamed to further the DA’s biased agenda. New Yorkers spoke out against the injustice and deceit,” the assemblyman stated. “If only Alvin Bragg actually carried out his duties and safeguarded New Yorkers, the city would be much safer today.”
Councilman Joe Borelli (D-Staten Island) remarked that the case “only highlights the distorted sense of justice held by Alvin Bragg.”
“The district attorney should step down in disgrace,” he added.
Alvin Bragg has faced criticism for his lenient stance on crime, including pursuing charges against former President Donald Trump and bodega worker Jose Alba, whose self-defense claim in a fatal stabbing was eventually upheld.
“Alvin Bragg has neglected his duty to uphold the law and ensure the safety of New Yorkers. Regrettably, he has embarked on politically motivated prosecutions in various cases, including those of President Trump, Daniel Penny, and Jose Alba,” stated US Rep. Michael Lawler. “He should be immediately ousted from his position.”
In a statement released post-verdict, Bragg’s office asserted that prosecutors “adhered to the facts and evidence in the case” and respect the jury’s decision.
