After killer quarter, Palantir CEO Alex Karp calls AI industry ‘Marxist’

On Monday, Palantir CEO Alex Karp reiterated his concerns about the reliability of AI frontier labs for businesses.

Karp, who holds a PhD in social theory and has a background in philosophy, suggested in Palantir’s quarterly shareholder letter that today’s capitalists resemble those who spurred the rise of Marxist socialism.

“There are Marxist overtones and undertones to our business,” he noted in a letter to shareholders reflecting on Palantir’s stellar quarter. “Others, including many developing large language models, aim, consciously or not, to seize the means of production from their supposed partners.”

Contrary to being edged out of the market, Palantir has thrived amid the AI boom. The company achieved unprecedented results, reporting $1.9 billion in revenue for the second quarter, a 93% increase from the previous year, and $1.1 billion in profit, which Karp highlighted as “more profit in a single quarter than our total revenue for the same period last year.”

During a conference call with Wall Street analysts, Karp further elaborated on his analogy, employing a “tech bro patriot” discourse typical of defense tech firms. (Notably, Palantir’s senior leadership is entirely male.)

He questioned whether companies are willing “to invest in a future” where their work aids adversaries, and a small elite who abstain from supporting military efforts claim the right to the nation’s entire means of production. He suggested that the majority should not have to bear the costs of such a revolution.

In contrast, Palantir offers model-agnostic AI and analysis software to governments and enterprises, empowering organizations to manage their data and AI “exhaust,” which includes prompts, orchestration, and context.

“How are we paying for it? In the enterprise context, people sign up for token self-pleasurings… at real cost like other forms of self pleasure,” Karp explained. “You are paying for the right for them to migrate your IP, your know-how, your expertise to their model, so that they can build a competitive business that doesn’t require your business or people. And why are they doing it? It’s actually being done for what they believe are moral reasons. They are superior to you. They deserve to colonize your enterprise.”

Despite the provocative language, Karp’s underlying argument is gaining traction elsewhere, including from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

This perspective is reflected in the growing list of companies that have partnered with or funded Anthropic and OpenAI as these AI labs venture into various fields such as design tools, healthcare, legal services, and drug discovery.

Ultimately, none of these companies are purely villains or heroes in the economic sphere. As AI rapidly expands and the market evolves, Palantir’s results suggest there is ample opportunity for all players.
