Ami Colé, a Trailblazing Beauty Startup, Closes Its Doors
Diarrha N’Diaye-Mbaye, a trailblazer in the world of venture capital for Black women, has announced the closure of her groundbreaking beauty startup, Ami Colé. This closure marks the end of an era for a company that made waves in the beauty industry by creating makeup specifically tailored for individuals with darker skin tones.
Launched in 2021 and carried by major retailers like Sephora, Ami Colé quickly gained popularity among celebrities such as Kelly Rowland and Mindy Kaling. However, after four years of operation, the company will officially cease operations in September.
In a poignant article for “The Cut,” N’Diaye-Mbaye shared her reasoning behind the decision to close Ami Colé, citing the challenges of sustaining the business in the current market landscape. Despite raising over $3 million in venture capital from prominent investors like G9 Ventures and Greycroft, the company faced obstacles in maintaining its growth and competitiveness against larger, more established brands.
One of the key issues N’Diaye-Mbaye highlighted was the disconnect between her vision for Ami Colé and the expectations of investors, particularly in the realm of consumer retail. While the brand had a dedicated customer base, the pressure to scale rapidly and meet investor demands took a toll on the company’s long-term viability.
As the venture funding landscape for Black founders faces challenges and uncertainties, N’Diaye-Mbaye remains optimistic about the future. Despite the closure of Ami Colé, she expressed her continued belief in the power of beauty and hinted at new endeavors on the horizon.
